What is Rheumatology?

Rheumatology is a speciality of medicine that deals with rheumatic diseases and
musculoskeletal conditions. These generally involve problems with the immune
system (the body’s internal defence mechanism) or gradual deterioration of the
musculoskeletal system.

The musculoskeletal system includes:

Bones

The Rheumatology care is provided by Dr Muddassir Shaikh (FRCP Edin, CCT Rheumatology, MBBS). Dr Muddassir Shaikh is a consultant Rheumatologist working at the James Cook University Hospital, NHS Trust Middlesbrough. He completed his Rheumatology specialist training in the North East England in 2015 and has been working as a Consultant Rheumatologist in the NHS since then.

Dr Shaikh is actively involved in teaching junior doctors and medical students. He is the research lead for the Rheumatology department at the James Cook University Hospital, Middlesbrough. He is an editorial board member of the (Oxford) Rheumatology journal. He has chaired and presented at several national conferences. He is a member of the British Society for Rheumatology, and leads the BSR special interest group on Infections in Rheumatology.

Do I need a referral from my GP?

We welcome patients referred from GPs, other specialists, physiotherapists, or you can self-refer.
Both insured and self-paying patients are welcome.

How do I book an appointment?

We aim to see patients within a week. Please contact us to book an appointment and for further details.

What will happen during my appointment with the Rheumatologist?

History of your symptoms will be taken, followed by examination. The nature and
treatment of your condition will then be explained to you. You may require further investigations which we can organise. We also have the facility to provide joint or soft tissue injections if needed.

We will then send you (and to your GP with your permission) a letter with the
consultation details and diagnosis within 3-7 days.
